The FDA approved sildenafil for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction in 1998, and has since been a trusted name in the treatment arsenal. But the drug's maker, Pfizer, still faces stiff competition. Last month, the drugmaker agreed to pay a royalty to a U. S. buyer for its Viagra drug. The agreement is expected to save the drug maker $1.8 billion to $1.9 billion over the next decade. The deal will give Pfizer a chance to market sildenafil citrate in lower-priced markets. Sildenafil citrate is available in generic forms, including Viagra and generic sildenafil, as well as the brand-name drug's brand-name versions. The royalty payment is expected to make the drug more widely available, allowing men to treat erectile dysfunction with the drug safely and quickly.
While Pfizer is fighting its way out of the recession and into the industry, the drugmaker is also looking to expand into emerging markets. The U. health care market is also projected to grow at a slower pace than the economy, according to IMS Health. The share price of the top three medicines on the Dow Jones index, which tracked down $16.07 a share in March, rose 17.3%. But the market is not exactly flat. It's not clear why. The drug maker's shares have gained about 20 percent in the last three months.
"This is a very aggressive start to our portfolio," said Michael Leicone, chairman and chief executive of Pfizer Inc. "This agreement is a tremendous step forward for Pfizer and its shareholders."
While sildenafil citrate is effective for up to 36 hours, the drug's half-life is only half that of Viagra. It takes blood levels in the body about three times longer than the average.
Pfizer has already taken legal action against the drug maker for its illegal marketing practices, and the company is trying to hold onto its market share. "This is an important step for Pfizer and its shareholders," said Andrew Friedman, an analyst at PFIZER. Pfizer is also seeking to block generic competition in the market for Viagra and sildenafil.
Friedman said the $1.8 billion in U. sales of sildenafil citrate helped Pfizer avoid a recession, allowing it to enter new markets and expanding its presence. But the deal, signed last month, will provide Pfizer with a huge amount of cash to pay for the drug. The pharmaceutical giant has about $500 million in equity in its stock, which it expects to close at half its 2008 levels by late 2009. The pharmaceutical industry was valued at more than $20 billion last year, including about $5 billion in sales of its $250 million stock.
Pfizer has also been a target of criticism from the pharmaceutical industry. Some market analysts said the drugmaker's failure to launch a generic version of Viagra or sildenafil could lead to new competitors. The drugmaker has faced stiff competition from generic competitors like Amgen Inc. and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., which are the world's biggest sellers of sildenafil citrate. Amgen, which had a patent last month for its erectile dysfunction treatment generic sildenafil, said it is working on a generic version of Viagra. Teva, which has about $100 million in debt, faces stiff competition from rival Pfizer Inc.'s Pfizer-owned Cialis Corp.
